Abstract
The present study was aimed to construct and validate Self-silencing scale for married people of Pakistan. The initial pool of 52 items was generated with the help of semi structured interviews and literature review. After scrutiny, 39 items were carefully chosen for factor analysis. The factorial validity and internal consistency of scale was determined on a purposive sample (age, M= 32.50, SD=15.43) of 531 married people (men = 260, women = 271). Result revealed five factor solutions with 22 items which accounted for 37.55% of the total items variance. The five factors were named as, a) Negative self-appraisal, b) Relationship maintenance, c) Divided self, d) Conflict avoidance and e) Spouse characteristics’ based selfsilencing. The alpha coefficient (α=.80) supported the internal consistency of SS scale. Gender differences in self-silencing provided evidence for the construct validity of the scale. The results regarding internal consistency and construct validity yielded the scale as a promising measure of self- silencing.
