Abstract
Depression is a common and potentially damaging public health issue among young adults globally. Previous studies have suggested a possible association between rejection sensitivity and symptoms of depression. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between rejection sensitivity and depression among female university students. It was a cross-sectional study and data was collected through convenience sampling technique. A total of 200 university students with age range between 18-26 years (M=22.62, SD=2.68) filled the study questionnaires through online google form. The Rejection Sensitivity scale and Beck Depression Inventory were used for assessment. Descriptive statistics, bivariate correlation and simple linear regression were used to analyze the data. Depression and rejection sensitivity had significant inverse correlation with age indicating it to be higher in younger age (p<.01). Rejection Sensitivity was found to be a significant predictor of depression among university students. This study implicates that rejection sensitivity can serve as a major factor in depression among young female students in Pakistan. This research could help to create awareness about successfully dealing with rejection sensitivity and hence, controlling the damage it could have on mental health of young students.
