Exploring Psychosocial Determinants of Subjective Career Success among Women Entrepreneurs: A Qualitative Analysis

Abstract
Main goal of the current research was to qualitatively assess psychosocial factors that contributed to Subjective Career Success among female entrepreneurs of Pakistan belonging to the small and medium business enterprises. Thematic Analysis technique was utilized to explore the contributory factors of Subjective Career Success. A sample of 10 women entrepreneurs (5 from urban and 5 from rural background) was decided on using non-probability purposive sampling technique. The women entrepreneurs between ages 25 to 45 having 5 years business experience (minimum) were engaged in the research. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the selected participants. Interviews were audiorecorded and transcribed verbatim to reproduce word to word verbal data. The results from thematic analysis yielded 9 main themes including: Religiosity, Resilience, Emotional Intelligence, Social Support, Parenting, Self-Worth, Positivity, Hard Work and Work-Life Balance. The themes mentioned were well considered for their saliency and frequency. “Social Support” was most frequently mentioned as leading contributory factor by the participants; Religiosity, Resilience and Emotional Intelligence were discussed as second, third and fourth most frequently occurring contributors. Women entrepreneurs coming from both rural and urban background supported the idea of psycho-social factors to be discussed as key contributors of Subjective Career Success.
